The Three Presiding Deities of the Sandhyas

The three presiding deities worshipped during the three daily sandhyas

Each deity governs a specific part of your being and a specific time of the day:

Gayatri: The Master of the Senses. She is the presiding deity of the morning (sunrise). Chanting during this time helps you master your senses and intellect.

Savitri: The Master of Prana (life force). She is the deity of the noon. When Gayatri protects the life force, she is called Savitri. She signifies Truth and protects those who lead a truthful life.

Sarasvati: The Master of Speech (vak). She is the deity of the evening (sunset). She bestows wisdom and helps you maintain purity and control over your words.


Gayatri purifies your senses.

Savitri purifies your life force.

Sarasvati purifies your speech.


Morning (Prātassandhyā): Gayatri

Domain: Master of the senses.

Focus: Chanting during this period is believed to help in mastering the senses and directing the intellect in a positive direction.

Color/Aspect: Often associated with a crimson (reddish) color.


Noon (Madhyāhnika): Savitri

Domain: Master of Prana (life force).

Focus: When the divine mother protects the life force, she is known as Savitri, who personifies truth. Chanting at noon helps vitalize one's life principle and adhere to a truthful life.

Color/Aspect: Associated with the color white.


Evening (Sāyamsandhyā): Sarasvati

Domain: Master of speech (vak) and wisdom.

Focus: The evening worship is for purifying the speech, ensuring that one's words are used wisely and reflect internal knowledge.

Color/Aspect: Associated with a dark-blue color.
