Bhajana Rahasya - by Bhaktivinoda Thakura
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura describes four obstacles in our spiritual life in his Sri Bhajana Rahasya.
This verse is originally from the Āmnāya-sūtra and is quoted by Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura in Chapter 2 of Śrī Bhajana-rahasya. It outlines the four primary spiritual obstacles (anarthas) that afflict a soul bewildered by material energy.
माया-मुग्धस्य जीवस्य ज्ञेयोऽनर्थश् चतुर्-विधः ।
हृद्-दौर्बल्यं चापराधोऽसत्-तृष्णा तत्त्व-विभ्रमः ॥
māyā-mugdhasya jīvasya jñeyo’narthaś catur-vidhaḥ
hṛd-daurbalyaṁ cāparādho’sat-tṛṣṇā tattva-vibhramaḥ
Synonyms
māyā-mugdhasya — of one bewildered by the illusory energy (māyā); jīvasya — of the living entity; jñeyaḥ — should be known; anarthaḥ — worthless things; catur-vidhaḥ — of four kinds; hṛd-daurbalyam — weakness of heart; ca — and; aparādhaḥ — offenses; asat-tṛṣṇā — hankering for temporary (material) things; tattva-vibhramaḥ — illusion regarding spiritual knowledge
Translation
"The anarthas, invaluable or useless things that the living entity finds useful or is attached to are known to be of four kinds: (1) weakness of heart (hṛdaya-daurbalya), (2) offenses (aparādha), (3) hankering for temporary material things (asat-tṛṣṇā), and (4) illusion about spiritual knowledge (tattva-vibhrama)."
A jīva who is bewildered is understood to possess, one, or all of these four kinds of anarthas – weakness of heart, offenses, thirst for temporary things, and philosophical misconceptions.
1. Hṛd-daurbalyam (Weakness of Heart): The internal instability that leads to attachment for non-spiritual things, deceit, envy, and the desire for fame. - weakness of heart
2. Aparādha (Offenses): Mistakes or offenses committed against the Holy Name, the Deity, devotees, or other living entities.
3. Asat-tṛṣṇā (Thirst for the Unreal): Hankering for temporary material objects, heavenly pleasures, mystic powers, or even impersonal liberation, ie material desires.
4. Tattva-vibhrama (Philosophical Illusion): Confusion or lack of clear understanding regarding one's own identity (sva-tattva), the Supreme Lord (para-tattva), and the process of devotion (sādhya-sādhana) ie illusion about spiritual knowledge

1. Tucchāsakti (Attachment to Insignificant Things): Being attached to material objects or activities that are not related to the service of Krsna
2. Kutīnātī (Deceitful Behavior) - This includes politicking, fault-finding, or being "crooked" in one's dealings with others
3. Mātsarya (Envy): Feeling a sense of jealousy or begrudging the success and advancement of others
4. Sva-pratiṣṭhatā (Desire for Personal Fame): The thirst for prestige, honor, and a high position within spiritual or social circles.

The 6 material waves of suffering (material whips or pangs)
soka, moha, ksut, pipasa, jara, and mrtyu
